With recent press reviews comparing Tokyoblu’s live band to “a cross between Basement Jaxx and early Groove Armada”, the future is definitely looking bright for the 7 piece outfit.
Coming together in the middle of 2004 Tokyoblu features musicians from some of Scotland’s best regarded unsigned bands including Amateur Guitar Anti-Heroes, Gecko, Amplifico and the sadly missed Risingson.
The band features Dave and Brett from Amplifico (and along with John Tokyoblu ex of Risingson) on drums and bass, who were described in NME a while back as being “as tight as a rusted lug nut” which we think was a compliment. They are accompanied by Paul of ace funk band Gecko on Guitar and the ever present and awesome Pepe Santamaria on percussion. Vocals come from Matt of Amateur Guitar Anti-Heroes, who have recently had tracks released on compilations by both Fierce Panda and the band agency in conjunction with Virgin, and the very sexy duo of Jenny and newcomer Maria.
Tokyoblu are produced by the ace Nigel Ross, whose tracks and remixes have graced the decks of some of the finest DJ’s across the country and have been a constant fixture at clubs in the capital for the last few years, if you love clubbing it’s a good bet you have danced to a few of his tracks.
